how can i get out of this mess and any advice will help!….
1. Try to stay away from bankruptcy.
2. I can’t say for “sure” that it is the same, but most “student loans” have a way to put the account in forbearance in the case of little or no income. It will not completely take the loan away but can defer the payments until you are back on your feet.
3. Check for state programs that will help both you and your child survive (food, rent help, etc) if they are available.

Student Loans?
Back in 2003, I was in default on my student loans. Well, I decided to do something about it and went into the rehab program. I have since been on track with my student loan payment (making payments on time etc.). My questions are will the past default status be removed from my credit report? Also have any of you ever dealt with the student loan ombudsman on an issue similar or like this one.

The default can be there for up to seven years, but if a company sees you have overcome that and are current and making good payments they will take it less into consideration usually.

Student loan borrower needs advice paying back loans:)?
I just wanted to ask anyone if they had some helpful hints and suggestions for someone trying to pay off 40,000 of student loan debt. I live in Canada and i currently make about 2,000 a month. First of all is there anything I can do within the student loan system to help reduce this debt, so any loan forgiveness or grants i can apply for? Secondly I’d really appreciate any help with budgeting or just any advice on how to make things cheaper? Thanks so much for your help:)
Try to find a second job, part-time that works around your current job. In the best world, you’d pay off this debt asap.
However, if that is impossible, contact the loan company directly and see if you can come to different terms on your loan. So long as you’ve been making payments as required, they may be willing to work with you. They can lower your monthly payment, for example. However, this extends the life of your loan, so you’d end up paying it decades longer. And it will increase the interest you pay, meaning that you won’t owe $40k – with the new interest, you could owe a lot more. So this is something you only want to do if you must.
There may be things you can do to lower your expenses. You could find a roommate or live at home. Cut out unnecessary expenses – no eating out, cut the cell phone plan, etc. What’s best is to do a formal monthly budget in Excel, where you list out all your expenses, and compare them to what you earn. Then see what you can cut.
