student loan grants

What student loans/grants can I apply for in addition to my student finance?

I am going to university this year. I have applied for student finance, and due to my parents’ income I am receiving the lowest amount.. But my parents are not helping out at all with the costs. Accomodation alone is higher than my student finance loan. How can I apply for other loans?? Are there any??

Welcome to the wonderful world of student finance! Like you I receive the lowest amounts and are not eligible for any grants or anything like that. Universities usually offer some kinds of grants or bursaries so the best thing is to contact them to see what they can offer you. Explain your situation to them and they will hopefully be very willing to help you. If this fails, you have several options which are:
Get a job
Live out of you overdraft (not advisable)
Try and get a loan from the bank, however with no credit history I’m not sure that you will be able to do this!
Good luck!

Student Loan/Grant Changes in HC Bill: Good Enough?

student loan garnishment

Tax refund garnishment due to default student loan?

Last year my tax return was taken to pay off part of a student loan. In the spring I contacted the company that holds the loan and set up a re-payment plan to get out of a default status. It’s a nine payment plan and my last payment is due on January 31st. How do I find out if I am still in the status that my return would get taken?

Dear chas: An installment agreement with the IRS abates all offset actions as long as you are current with the arrangement. I would call the offset number and also the company that holds the loan. If your last payment is Jan 31 2009 it is unlikely they will offset your debt if you have been current with all payments.

News Update: Discover Financial Services Acquires Student Loan From Citigroup For $600 Mln

student loan kheaa

Student loan was in default from attending college in 2002. I paid the loan in 2009, is there a tax deduction?

The loan was through Kentucky Higher Education (KHEAA) and was in default until I finally had the money to pay it off in full in 2009. I need to reduce my earnings by about 2,000 dollars for the 2009 tax season to maximize my Earned Income Credit and increase my state return as well. I was hoping perhaps the interest would be tax deductible or possibly the tuition itself as I incurred the expense in 2009. In total I remitted 4,000 dollars even to Williams and Fudge which was a collection agency that pursued the debt for Lindsey Wilson College.

If the amount you paid on the student loan included an interest portion, then that can be deducted as an adjustment to income on the bottom section of page 1 of the 1040 for student loan interest paid. I am assuming that you meet the criteria since you almost qualify for the EIC. If you also paid the tuition in 2009 and you did not deduct it previously, you are eligible to take the tuition and fees deduction.
