Any college student looking to obtain federal student loans will need to fill out a substantial amount of paperwork and provide documentation with it. The loan application must then be processed and reviewed.

Since the whole procedure may take several months or more, it is a good idea to begin researching federal student loans 6-12 months before you hope to begin classes. For high school students, the fall or winter of their senior year is the right time to start. If you are an older student returning to school, or beginning after entering the work force, it makes sense to begin your research as soon as you make the decision to take classes.

Where to Start

The process begins with filling out the FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid. For high school students and young adults, initial research must be done to understand what is required – such things as determining your dependency status. FAFSA provides an initial worksheet which will give prospective students an idea of their eligibility. And because there is an application deadline date for each semester, getting organized and doing the research early will make the whole thing easier and less stressful.

The deadline is typically about 2 months prior to the start of classes for a given semester. Be sure to compile items like social security number, a copy of your birth certificate, custody or adoption papers if applicable, and proof of residency to include with your application once you start filling it out.

High school students planning to go to college are looking for information and direction about schools, potential majors and sources for scholarships and student loans.

Most public and private high schools have an office staffed with guidance counselors to help, and one of their primary endeavors is to help students discover sources for student loans.

These counselors should be well-versed in the FAFSA application and all that is required to fill it out, including needed documentation. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid should be the first step in finding the funding for college.

Good high school counselors will also have a list of student loan, grants and scholarship opportunities, from both public and private sources.

While most students might think there is only one type of government loan for college, there are actually many, including Stafford loans, Perkins loans, and others. In addition, there is a wide variety of private student loans, including standard loans for lenders like banks, but also loans and grants offered by private businesses and foundation eager to see young people get an education and be better prepared to work in business and industry well into the 21st Century.

These forward thinking companies are concerned about their future work force and are willing to invest to get the best. High school guidance offices should be aware of these resources and be able to hand students applications or point them to the websites where applications and descriptions of the loans are available.

If you are a high school student or an adult who desires to enter college, the good news is that money is available for almost all applicants.

The Federal government has long been willing to invest in the education of America’s students, doing what it can to increase the number of college graduates. A better educated work force means American companies retain a competitive edge in many fields, and it also means higher wages, and more taxes, so in the end the government loan and grant programs more than pay for themselves.

The Direct Federal Loan Program is the core program offered by the government, and nearly every student seeking financial aid will qualify for this program. If you don’t it’s likely because you’ve got great wealth, and paying for college would not represent a financial burden anyway.

The Federal Family Education Loan Program, or FFELP, is another program with a very high acceptance rate. The funds, rather than coming directly from the government, are provided by private lenders, though guaranteed by the federal government.

The place to start in seeking to qualify for these programs is to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, the FAFSA. Get started at least six months ahead of the time you want to start classes, and you should be approved in time.

That debt has often resulted in missed payments and other factors that damage credit scores badly. It would be a great disservice to them if the funding they need to get improve their education were denied to them, and thankfully, government student loans are available to those with bad credit.

The first choice of those with bad credit is either a Direct Federal Loan or the Federal Family Education Loan Program, or FFELP. These are the core programs offered by the government, and neither of them requires good credit, since there is no credit check done during the application process. Qualifying is based solely on need, making them especially attractive to those with bad credit, since low income and even poverty are often a major part of the problem.

These options are available to both independent students and dependents living at home. They can be sought for graduate education, and are a popular choice for adults returning to school after being in the workforce. These low-interest loans are a wonderful step in rebuilding your financial situation and restoring good credit, in addition to helping provide you the education you need to fulfill your goals and destiny.

Are you a high school student planning to attend college, but need tuition assistance to make your dreams a reality? Are you an older prospective student returning to school? The good news is that federal student aid is available to almost all who apply. Before you visit your school’s guidance office or look to apply online, here’s what you should know. First, you’ll need to fill out the FAFSA, which is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It is the core document used to determine your eligibility for tuition assistance and loans.

Once that is done and reviewed, you’ll be notified of which programs you qualify for, and a Student Aid Report about your qualifications will be sent to all the schools you applied to. The institutions use it as the basis for offering you a specific package of funding. The most common loan programs from which the funds come are the Direct Federal Loan program with the government as the lender, and the FFELP, or Family Federal Education Loan Program, in which the money comes from private sources but is backed by the federal government. These are needs-based programs with assistance levels based on your income, or your family’s income if you are a dependent. They offer low-interest loans that you do not have to begin paying back until you have completed your education or stopped taking classes.

Some state governments offer tuition and loan assistance as well, often in conjunction with federal programs, but not always. It is worth checking for the availability of these loans after you have begun the process on the federal level.
Once you have been qualified for a loan, the money will be disbursed. With a Direct Federal loan, the Treasury Department sends a check directly to your school to cover tuition, fees, housing if applicable, and if there remaining funds, they will be presented to you in check form.

It is a resource for those who have received any type of federally offered or guaranteed student loan in the past, but who then find it impossible to pay it back. If you become disabled, the chances of having part, or all, of your loan erased are high. However, this is not why most pursue loan forgiveness. Serious debt is the primary reason former students seek relief through this program.

If you plan to seek help through the Government Student Loans Forgiveness Program one of two things will be required of you – a significant commitment to volunteerism, or entering the military. The types of volunteering that qualify an individual to have loans forgiven center on community service at home or abroad. Examples include joining a government sponsored program such as AmeriCorps, VISTA, and the Peace Corps.

Enlisting in the military in an active duty role may qualify you for relief since each branch has a loan forgiveness program. Joining the Army Reserves or the National Guard will also provide opportunities for loan forgiveness.
Besides these most common options, becoming a teacher, medical personnel, or lawyer, and then choosing to work among under-served populations may qualify you for loan forgiveness. Teaching in a low-income area, working in a free medical clinic, or becoming a public defender is viewed as choosing service over financial compensation, and the government rewards that with loan forgiveness.

It is often that you might be worried about bad credit becoming an obstacle for availing student loans. However, there is no need for worry. Your bad credit record will not be a stumbling block for your dream of going to college. It is because there are student loans facilities that have no relation with the existing credit of yours. You can avail of the federal loans meant for the students such as the Stafford Loans and Perkins Loans to mention a few as well as of other scholarship grants such as the Pell Grants.

Stafford Loans have the plus point that it does not require the criterion of credit check in no way at all to become qualified to avail of student loans. However, credit check might become an issue in the case of non-need-based loans such as Grad Plus Loans and Parent Loans. To take private student loans, one will have to get past the criterion of credit check. To get the private loan advanced, one has to locate a co-signor who can be your parent, guardian, relative or a good friend for that sake who trusts you and has a good credit account.

Once you have taken the policy, it is best to avoid the habit of accruing further credit burden to yourself. To deal with the past debt or debts, there is the option of student loan consolidation available. These are very common so you need not think up that you are the first one or so. Most lenders of loans encourage the consolidation of loans. The advantage this can give is that you can roll all the credit commitments into one single package at a moderate rate of interest. Thus you would be relieved off the burden of paying exorbitant amount of money. Sometimes you will be able to reduce the loan debt by even fifty percentage. The relatively moderate amount of monthly installment payment owes to the fact that the tenure of payment might be stretched to a greater period of time.

Private student loans bad credit is one of the most helpful financial aid available to the students. Click here to know more about private student loans

You’ve finally graduated. Somehow you got a career in this terrible economy. You’re independent and ready to face the world by yourself. Unfortunately, this means paying more bills. One of those will most likely be your student loans. Paying back student loans could possibly be the most annoying bill you have as a young professional…and possibly the most important.

Most student loan payments don’t start until 6 months after graduation or until the New Year after your graduation. For example, if you graduated in May, you won’t have student loan payments until January. The average college student comes out of college with $20,000 in debt. This is a lot of money, but the good news is a lot of people are in the same boat as you.

Here is a good step-by-step process for paying back your student loans. Keep in mind that late payments can affect your credit score, and make it harder later in life to buy a car, a house, move to a different city or even get a credit card. Making payments on time is extremely important.

Before you choose a repayment plan…

* Understand the repayment options available to you.
* Compare your repayment options. Sallie Mae has a Loan Repayment Calculator available to help estimate monthly payments.
* Know the importance of paying back your loans. As previously mentioned, your credit score can be greatly affected if you don’t make loans on time
* Understand that choosing a plan with lower payments may result in higher costs over the life of the loan.
* Know you can prepay your loans (partly or in full) without penalty which will lower the interest on the loans you have yet to pay back.

Lowering or postponing your payments

* Depending on your financial circumstance based on the company you work for, you might want to find a payment plan for your student loans with a low monthly payment. Federal loans through Sallie Mae that offer lower monthly payments are:

- Extended repayment – gives you up to 25 years to pay back loans. This makes monthly payments lower but makes the overall loan balance higher through interest
- Graduated repayment – this allows Stafford, Parent PLUS Graduate PLUS, and Federal Consolidation loans to have reduced rates as low as just the interest. Also, many who choose this repayment option need to repay during school as well because the repayment option takes so long.
- Income-sensitive repayment – You apply annually to this payment option; paying 4-25% of your monthly gross income along with the monthly accrued interest.
- Income-based repayment – This plan allows customers to make monthly payments that are no higher than 15% of their discretionary income. This is designed for people with higher loan balances as compared to their incomes

Postponing your payments can be done in two ways; Deferments and Forbearance. Deferments is a temporary suspension of paying back student loans whereas a forbearance lets you suspend or reduce your student loan payments under certain circumstances and for specified periods of up to a year at a time.

The Perkins loan is a federal student loan available for students attending an accredited college or university. Students must be in their first undergraduate or graduate program and have any extraordinary financial need. In order to determine if a student is eligible to receive a Perkins Loan, students must complete and submit the FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Students will receive an EFC score from the Department of Education, which will determine how much a student is eligible to receive in federal financial aid. Students that are unable to contribute $0 will have a score of 0, while a student that is able to pay for all college expenses will have an EFC score of 3,000. As you can see, the range for an EFC score is between 0 and 3000. Students in the lower EFC score range will be eligible to receive a Perkins Loan.

The student’s college/university is the lender of the loan, which means all disbursements will be made out to your school. The lending process is fairly simple. First, the federal government will distribute federal funds to participating colleges, who then lend these funds to attending students. When the student had completed their program or is no longer enrolled then they will make all repayments back to their school, who will then send the borrowed funds back to the federal government.

There are many advantages with the Perkins Loan, which includes very competitive interest rates for borrowers and friendly loan repayment terms. The Perkins Loan interest rate is currently at 5% and is variable, which means it can fluctuate throughout the term of the loan. Even though the interest rate is variable, it is still variable competitive when you compare it against other private bank student loans. Another advantage of this loan is that it offers very friendly repayment terms. Students have an option to choose from multiple repayment plans that suites their best needs.
